Japan-Singapore Telemedicine as APII project

Multimedia Telemedicine using Computer Networks
Hiroshi Mizushima
National Cancer Center Research Instititue, Tokyo Japan.
National Cancer Center introduced computer network system between
Chuo-campus and East-campus in April 1994, and this network has expanded to
connect 20 institutes. This network is designed not only for E-mail and
data transmissions but also for TV-conference with High Definition
Television (HDTV) image capability. To obtain a good response in
transferring HDTV images to each site, we developed a system using
pre-sending techniques. Network protocol was standardized for smooth
integration to new institutes. As patient's data are also transferred, we
built a 'firewall' to protect the network system security, while
maintaining comfortable connectivity to the Internet. To enhance the
system, we are experimenting 156M and 45Mbps high speed connection with
East campus and National Cardiovascular Center at Osaka.
There are other medical networking projects in Japan, and we are now
coordinating to have a secure network among these projects.
